Field Notes: Hudson, NY

Hudson, NY

What’s the deal with Hudson, New York? This upstate gem is the chill, stylish cousin of New York City. It has a laid-back vibe with a touch of city edge. But what really makes Hudson, Hudson is its decades long commitment to antiques! Wandering down Warren Street, you’ll find yourself surrounded by arts, furniture, and objects of the past. And while Hudson is ever changing, the antiquing in Hudson is here to stay.

Where's the best place to get food in Hudson?

There are wonderful food options all throughout Hudson, but we always gravitate towards Yummy Kitchen (a food truck parked just outside Olde Hudson on 5th and Warren). They have a delicious Panang Curry thats makes our mouth water just thinking about it – highly recommend!

We have yet to go, but we've been really curious about Feast & Floret. A cozy Italian restaurant serving up fresh pasta next to roaring fires and fresh flowers. It's one of those places where you want to pop your head in to see what it's all about.

Don't forget to add Culture Cream to the list. A healthy spin on ice cream that's full of probiotics and naturally flavored ingredients foraged throughout the Hudson Valley!

What hotels would you recommend?

If you're looking for an ultra relaxing stay that's oriented around bringing the outdoors in, we would highly recommend Piaule in Catskill. No more than a 15 minute drive to the heart of Hudson, you'll essentially be staying at a spa oriented around nature.

For a much more local stay, we would highly suggest Long Story Short. Right on Warren St, walking distance to everything, you will feel as if you're a local. The vibes are city meets country in all the best ways.

P.s. They even offer some sweet & Tread Well products for their guests :)

Where do you spend your time outdoors?

We've always been fans of Olana State Park! It's a little bit outside of town, but it's the beautiful old home of Fredrick Church (a famous Hudson Valley painter) that sits atop 250 acres of land. You can walk throughout the grounds and take in the panoramic views of the Catskill Mountains – it's really gorgeous!

What's a good place to grab a drink?

There's something like 90 breweries in the Catskills, and a couple of good ones are right in Hudson! If you're looking for a chill vibe with some good beer, we recommend Hudson Brewing Co. or Union Street Brewing. If you're more into a cocktail or nice glass of wine, check out The Maker – a beautiful cozy boutique hotel that transports you abroad. You can't go wrong!

Is there a good Cafe to work from?

Not too often we're working in Hudson, but if we were, we would definitely be hanging at Wylde Hudson. You'll find yourself in a large garage turned new aged coffee shop where people are hanging and being productive. Seating is indoor/outdoor, and if you need a computer break there's a cute little shop next door!

        So, where do you shop?

If you go to Hudson without visiting The Antique Warehouse that would be a major miss. It's essentially a 40,000 square foot building full of curated antique booths that everyone should see.

On Warren St. our most frequented stops are River and Finch, for a combo of good clothes, antiques and vibes. But honestly, you can't go wrong. This is the kind of main street that encourages meandering and popping in.

P.s. The mural above is painted by a local artist, Esme Shapiro, and can be found in River Shoppe.

What's the best place to get produce?

Hands down, the best place in town for "marketing" is Talbott & Arding. Two minutes off the beaten path you'll find an abundance of fresh produce, an incredible assortment of cheeses, coolers full of craft beers and a lot of yummy looking baked goods. This one is a must!

Where can we find some good art?

Just outside of Hudson in Ghent, NY, theres a great sculpture park by the name of Art Omi. The sculptures are large and funky, and always leave you with a shift in perspective. On Warren St, there are a bunch of galleries to visit, but if we had to recommend particulars we might suggest Caldwell Gallery or Peter Jung Fine Art – offering to two very different tastes!
